Chevrolet's Chevelle SS 454 in 1970 is often named as the high point of the muscle car race. With the top LS6 engine it was rated at 450 horsepower, a number few road cars of any era could match.

Why the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 reached 450 hp

General Motors lifted its long-standing cap on engine size in mid-size cars for 1970, so Chevrolet could finally fit a 454 cubic inch big-block. The LS5 version made 360 horsepower. The LS6 added higher compression, a solid-lifter camshaft and a bigger carburetor for 450 horsepower and around 500 lb-ft of torque.

A short peak for Chevelle muscle

Insurance premiums and new emissions rules were closing in, and output ratings fell in the following years, which gives 1970 a special place. Rare LS6 cars bring top prices, and cowl-induction hoods and build-tag decoding are worth studying before any purchase.
